Title Wasteground
Date 2005
Dimensions 60cm x 40cm
Remarks Early dawn, being driven through Ahmedabad in India, I glanced out the window at some rubble and rubbish strewn wasteground backed by a high and crumbling wall that blocked the light of daybreak. In the gloom some twenty or more ragged people of all ages sat, lay, stood or crouched around meagre fires. To depict the truly poor as picturesque is easily done and for a westerner to be sentimental or righteous on such matters belies the scope and the politics of poverty. The only option was to paint a sombre work or none at all.
